Form 990-T (2025): Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return

Form 990-T, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return (and proxy tax under section 6033(e)), is the income tax return of a tax-exempt organization or trust. The IRS About page says exempt organizations use it to report unrelated business income, figure and report unrelated business income tax, report proxy tax liability, claim a refund of income tax paid by a regulated investment company (RIC) or real estate investment trust (REIT) on undistributed long-term capital gain, request a credit for certain federal excise taxes paid or for small employer health insurance premiums paid, and report unrelated business income tax on reinsurance entities.

This is the 2025 form, for calendar year 2025 or a fiscal year beginning in 2025. It is filed by the organization or the trustee, not by individuals for their own income. The instructions say each separate unrelated trade or business is reported on its own Schedule A (Form 990-T).

The form says "Do not enter SSNs on this form as it may be made public if your organization is a 501(c)(3)." You can fill out Form 990-T free in your browser on this page and download the result without an account.

Part II: Tax Computation

Line 1 multiplies line 11 by 21% (0.21) for organizations taxable as corporations. Line 2 is for trusts at trust rates. Lines 3 to 7 add proxy tax, other taxes, alternative minimum tax and tax on noncompliant facility income.

How to fill out Form 990-T

  1. 1

    Complete each Schedule A first

The instructions say organizations with unrelated business taxable income complete a separate Schedule A (Form 990-T) for each unrelated trade or business, and complete all of them first. An organization with none files Form 990-T only.

  2. 2

    Fill in the heading

The instructions say the name and address should match other Forms 990. Check the exemption section and the organization type in item G, and enter the number of Schedules A in item J. The form says not to enter SSNs.

  3. 3

    Part I

Enter the total from all Schedules A on line 1, then charitable contributions and any net operating loss deduction. The instructions say a specific deduction of $1,000 is allowed on line 8, and only one is taken regardless of the number of unrelated businesses.

  4. 4

    Part II

A corporation multiplies Part I, line 11 by 21% on line 1. A trust figures tax at trust rates on line 2 using the tax rate schedule or Schedule D (Form 1041). Add proxy tax and any other taxes, then total on line 7.

  5. 5

    Part III

Subtract credits, add other amounts due and enter payments on lines 6a to 6k. Line 9 shows tax due and line 10 an overpayment. For a refund, the form says to also complete and attach Form 8050.

  6. 6

Parts IV and V, then sign

Answer the Part IV questions and add any supplemental information in Part V. The instructions say a corporate officer such as the president, treasurer or chief accounting officer signs, or for a trust the individual fiduciary or an authorized officer.

Electronic filing

The instructions say an organization or trust defined in section 511 files Form 990-T electronically. An applicable entity that is not one and files only for an elective payment election may file on paper with the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Ogden, UT 84201-0027.

Due dates

The instructions say a section 401(a) employees' trust, IRA (including SEPs and SIMPLEs), Roth IRA, Coverdell ESA or Archer MSA files by the 15th day of the 4th month after its tax year ends. All other organizations file by the 15th day of the 5th month.

Extensions

The instructions say an automatic extension of time to file is requested on Form 8868, and that all entities filing Form 990-T use Form 8868 for it.

Paying the tax

The instructions say any tax due is paid in full by the due date of the return without extension, and estimated tax installments generally apply when estimated tax is expected to be $500 or more.

Amended returns

Check the amended return box in item F and explain in Part V which lines changed and why. The instructions say an amended return is generally filed within 3 years after the original due date or filing date, whichever is later.

Public inspection

The form says it is open to public inspection for 501(c)(3) organizations only. The instructions say a 501(c)(3) organization makes its entire Form 990-T, including amended returns, available for public inspection.
