How it works

Three steps, one page.

  1. Add your files

Drop them on the box, or bring them in from your device, Google Drive, Dropbox or a link.

  2. Pick the format

The converter reads each file's type and lists the formats it can become.

  3. Convert and download

Each file shows its own status. Download the result when it finishes.

Why indox

One converter for every file you have.

It reads the file, so you only pick the result

Add a file and the converter checks what it is, then lists only the formats that file can become. You never scroll past options that would fail.

Different files, one list

Add a photo, a spreadsheet and a video together and choose a format for each one. Every file shows its own status and has its own download.

Bring files from where they already are

Drop files on the box, choose them from your device, or import them from Google Drive, Dropbox or a link. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

Format guide

Which format should you pick?

The right format depends on where the file goes next. Start from what you need it to do.

Images

JPG to share, PNG to edit, PDF to send several as one file.

FormatBest forKeep in mind
JPGPhotos you share, upload or emailSmall files, but no transparency, and each save loses a little detail
PNGScreenshots, logos and images you will editKeeps every pixel and transparency; files are larger than JPG
WEBPImages on a websiteSmaller than JPG at similar quality; some older apps cannot open it
HEICPhotos kept on an iPhoneAbout half the size of JPG, but many Windows and web apps cannot read it
AVIFWeb images where size matters mostVery small files; support outside browsers is still limited
SVGLogos and icons that must scaleStays sharp at any size; it holds drawings, not photos

Documents

PDF to send or print, DOCX or XLSX to keep editing.

FormatBest forKeep in mind
PDFFiles you send, print or archiveLooks the same on every device; hard to edit
DOCXText you still need to editOpens in Word, Google Docs and Pages; layout can shift between apps
XLSXSpreadsheets with formulas and several sheetsKeeps formulas and formatting; needs a spreadsheet app
CSVMoving table data between systemsPlain text any tool can read; one sheet, no formulas or styling
HTMLContent for a web pageOpens in any browser; images and styles may sit in separate files
EPUBBooks read on a phone or e-readerText reflows to fit the screen, so page numbers are not fixed

Video

MP4 plays almost everywhere, so it is the usual target.

FormatBest forKeep in mind
MP4Sharing, uploading and playback on any deviceThe safest choice; quality depends on the settings it was made with
MOVEditing on a Mac or iPhoneHigh quality from Apple cameras; large, and less at home on Windows
MKVFilms with several audio tracks or subtitlesHolds almost anything; many phones and TVs will not play it
WEBMVideo embedded in a web pageSmall and open; editors and Apple devices support it poorly
AVIOlder Windows software and camerasWidely known but dated; files are large for their quality

Audio

MP3 for listening, WAV for editing.

FormatBest forKeep in mind
MP3Music and voice on any playerSmall files; some detail is removed and cannot be restored
WAVRecording and editingFull, uncompressed quality; about ten times the size of MP3
M4AApple devices and voice memosBetter quality than MP3 at the same size; less universal
OGGGames, apps and open-source toolsOpen and efficient; many car and phone players skip it

Devices

The converter runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is no app to install.

Worth knowing before you convert

  • A scanned PDF is a picture of text. Without OCR there is no text to move into Word or Excel.
  • Converting to a smaller format, such as WAV to MP3 or PNG to JPG, removes detail that converting back cannot restore.
  • Copy-protected ebooks, music and video cannot be converted.
  • Fonts that are not embedded in a document are replaced, which can move line breaks.

Questions

Before you convert a file.

How does the converter know what my file is?

It reads the file's type when you add it, then lists only the formats that file can become. indox supports 5,967 conversions in total.

Can I convert more than one file at a time?

Yes. Add several files to the same list and choose a format for each one. They do not have to be the same type.

Which format should I choose?

Choose by where the file goes next: JPG or MP4 to share, PDF to send or print, and PNG, DOCX or WAV to keep editing. The format guide on this page compares each one.

Will converting lower the quality?

It depends on the format you pick. Going to a smaller format, such as PNG to JPG or WAV to MP3, removes some detail to save space. Going the other way keeps what the file already has, but cannot bring back what was removed.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The converter runs in the browser on iPhone, Android, tablets and computers, so there is no app to install.

How long does a conversion take?

Most images and documents finish in seconds. Long videos and large files take longer, and each file shows its own status while it runs.

Why can a file not be converted?

The usual causes are a damaged file, copy protection, or a size over your limit. The converter shows a message on the file that failed.

Is indox free to use?

Yes, to start. You get free credits every day with no account and no card. Paid plans add more volume, batch jobs and the API.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. indox runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install, and you can convert or edit a file as a guest. Signing in raises your upload limit and keeps your history.

What happens to my files after I upload them?

Files are encrypted in transit. Files uploaded on the free tier are deleted automatically within 24 hours.

How large a file can I upload?

The limit for your account is shown under the upload box on this page. Signing in gives you a higher limit than a guest gets.

Is there an API for developers?

Yes. One REST API runs every tool on this site: send a file, poll the job, download the result. The free tier needs no key.
