ODT to PDF Converter

Add an ODT document from LibreOffice or OpenOffice and get a PDF that looks the same on any device.

To convert odt to pdf, add the .odt file, keep PDF as the output format and download the result. In our test a 3-page ODT came back as a 3-page A4 PDF with every font embedded, but a web link was lost and one font that the server lacks was replaced. Check the PDF before you send it.

Transfers use HTTPS, and files converted on the free tier are deleted after 24 hours, so the result is not a long-term archive. Quality depends on the source file, so open the PDF file once before you share it.

ODT (OpenDocument Text)

The word-processor format of the OpenDocument standard, native to LibreOffice and OpenOffice. A ZIP package of XML parts (content, styles, metadata) standardised by OASIS and ISO/IEC 26300. Text reflows to the page and the fonts installed, so a missing font can change line breaks and page count.

PDF (Portable Document Format)

A fixed-layout document format published as ISO 32000. Each page records the exact position of every character, image and line, usually with the fonts embedded, so it displays and prints identically in any reader and is awkward to edit.

Why use indox to convert ODT to PDF?

Made for LibreOffice and OpenOffice files

ODT is the native format of both programs. Add the file as it is; there is no need to export it from Writer first or to open it on a computer that has Writer installed.

Nothing to install on any device

The conversion runs on indox servers, so it works from a browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, a Chromebook, an Android phone or an iPhone. People who receive an .odt and have no Writer can still get a PDF.

Headings become bookmarks

In our test the 3 headings of the sample became 3 bookmarks in the PDF, so a reader can jump between sections. A link from one page to another also survived.

Fonts are embedded in the PDF

All fonts in our test PDF were embedded as subsets, so the pages look the same wherever the PDF is opened. The page names the fonts that were swapped.

Your ODT is left as it was

The converter makes a new PDF and does not change your source, so you can fix a problem in the ODT and convert again.

What happens to your document

Stays

  • The page count: 3 pages in, 3 pages out in our test
  • The text, including accented letters such as café and naïve
  • Table text, which we could find in the PDF
  • Headings, as 3 bookmarks
  • Your original ODT, which is not touched

Changes

  • Editing: the PDF is fixed, not a word-processor file
  • Fonts the server lacks: Segoe Script became Noto Sans
  • Pictures: the PNG became a JPEG at 203 ppi
  • A web link: lost in our test

How do I convert ODT to PDF online?

  1. 1

    Add your ODT file

Drop the .odt file on the box or choose it from your device. Keep the original; it is the only editable copy.

  2. 2

Confirm PDF, then start the conversion

Check that PDF is the output format, then start the conversion and wait for it to finish. In our test a 3-page document took 13.1 seconds from the click to Completed.

  3. 3

Download the PDF and read it through

Save the PDF and page through it on the device you will use. Check the page count, the headings, the table and any link you need, and look at a heading that used an unusual font.

What do I get from indox's ODT to PDF converter?

You hand over an ODT file and take away a PDF with embedded fonts and bookmarks, ready to email, upload or print. Nothing is installed on your computer. The page lists what was kept and what was not in our own run, including the link that was lost.

  • A PDF you can open on any device
  • Nothing to install on Windows, Mac or a phone
  • Results measured on a real test document
  • A list of what changes and what fails

What are the limits for ODT to PDF?

Size

The upload box shows the live size limit before you add a file. Signing in raises it; a paid plan does not change it.

Formats

ODT in, PDF out. Pick another output on the converter if you need a different format.

Privacy

Files are encrypted in transit over HTTPS and processed on indox infrastructure.

Deletion

Free-tier files are kept for 24 hours after the job finishes, then deleted automatically.

Limits worth knowing

  • A font the server does not have is replaced with another one. The PDF looks the same everywhere, but it may not look like your document. A script or decorative font is the most likely to change.
  • Web links may not stay clickable. In our test the https link was lost and only the internal link survived. We could not repeat this check, so test a link before you rely on it.
  • Page breaks can shift if a substituted font has different letter widths. Compare the page count and where each page ends.
  • We saw no option to choose a page range, PDF/A or image quality for this pair, so the defaults apply. The PDF in our test was tagged, but we did not test it with a screen reader.
  • Tracked changes, macros and form fields were not tested. If they matter, check the PDF page by page.
  • A document that is damaged or not valid ODT fails to convert. Open it in LibreOffice first to see whether it loads.

Who can use a ODT to PDF converter?

  • LibreOffice and OpenOffice users who send documents out

Many recipients have Word or only a phone. A PDF freezes the layout, so the letter, report or CV reaches them as you wrote it.

  • People whose exported PDF looks different

Users report headings changing font or lines breaking differently when a font is missing on the computer that exports. This page lists the fonts that were embedded and the ones that were swapped in a real run.

  • Mac and phone owners who received an .odt

An iPhone or a Mac without LibreOffice often cannot open the file. A browser is enough to get a PDF.

  • Senders of documents where page count matters

Applications, contracts and coursework have page limits. We kept the 3 pages of our test, and you can check yours before you submit.

When to use it

  • Emailing a CV, cover letter or report written in Writer to someone who does not use LibreOffice.
  • Opening an .odt attachment on a phone or Mac that has no ODT viewer by turning it into a PDF.
  • Submitting a form, assignment or application that accepts only PDF.
  • Checking how a document with a table and headings will print before you send it.

ODT to PDF FAQs

How do I convert ODT to PDF?

Open the converter, add the .odt file, keep PDF as the output and download the result. No account or software was needed in our anonymous test.

Can I convert ODT to PDF on an iPhone or other phone?

Yes, if the phone has a browser. Open indox.org, choose the file from the phone, convert it and save the PDF. A large document is easier to handle on a computer.

Will my fonts and layout stay the same?

Mostly, but not always. A font that is not installed on the server is replaced. Calibri became Carlito, which has the same widths, while Segoe Script became Noto Sans. The substitutes are embedded, so the PDF looks the same on every device.

Will links and bookmarks work in the PDF?

Headings became bookmarks in our test, and a link to another page survived. A web link did not. Click each link you need in the PDF before you send it.

Will the page count stay the same?

In our test 3 pages stayed 3. A substituted font can move line breaks, so compare the count for your own file.

What happens to pictures?

They are kept but re-encoded. In our test a 199 KB PNG became a 10.1 KB JPEG at 203 ppi. Check a picture that needs fine detail.

What is an ODT file?

ODT is the OpenDocument text format used by LibreOffice and OpenOffice. It is a ZIP package of XML parts and is standardised as ISO/IEC 26300.

Can I get an editable file instead of a PDF?

A PDF is meant for reading and printing. If you need to keep editing, convert to DOCX or keep the ODT.
