Transparency stays transparent
AVIF can carry an alpha channel and so can PNG. In our test the transparent circle in the middle of the picture was still fully transparent in the PNG, so a cut-out or logo keeps its see-through background.

Convert to PNG
Add an AVIF file and get a lossless PNG back. A still AVIF with transparency keeps its transparent areas. An animated AVIF is not converted.
To convert avif to png, add the .avif file, keep PNG as the output format and download the result. In our test, an 11,686 byte 10-bit AVIF with transparency became a 20,639 byte png that kept its transparent pixels, so expect a larger file.
Transfers use HTTPS, and files converted on the free tier are deleted after 24 hours, so the result is not a long-term archive. Quality depends on the source file, so open the PNG file once before you share it.
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)
A modern image format from the Alliance for Open Media that stores pictures using AV1 video compression. It compresses far harder than JPG and supports transparency, HDR, 10 and 12-bit colour and animation, but reached browsers only around 2020.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
A lossless raster format with a full alpha channel. It preserves every pixel it is given and supports transparency, which makes it the usual choice for logos, screenshots, and any image with sharp edges or text.
A 1200 × 800 px, 10-bit AVIF with a transparent circle, converted on indox.org
AVIF can carry an alpha channel and so can PNG. In our test the transparent circle in the middle of the picture was still fully transparent in the PNG, so a cut-out or logo keeps its see-through background.
Some editors and viewers still cannot open .avif files. PNG opens in practically every app, browser and upload form, so one conversion makes the picture usable again.
The conversion runs on indox servers, so it works from Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone with only a browser. In our test we used it anonymously, with no sign-in.
An animated AVIF is not turned into a still. In our test a three-frame animated AVIF failed and no PNG was offered; the limits below say what to do instead.
Drop the .avif file on the converter or choose it from your device. Keep the original, because the PNG is a decoded copy and cannot be turned back into the smaller AVIF.
Check that PNG is the output format and start the conversion. In our test it took 3.2 seconds from the click to Completed, including the upload.
Save the PNG and open it on a checkerboard or dark background to confirm the transparent areas. The saved file name starts with a short hash, followed by your original name and _converted.png.
You add a still AVIF and take away a lossless PNG that keeps transparency and colour depth and opens in the software that refuses AVIF. The page states the size growth and the animated-file failure that we measured, so you know before you convert whether it fits the job.

The upload box shows the live size limit before you add a file. Signing in raises it; a paid plan does not change it.
AVIF in, PNG out. Pick another output on the converter if you need a different format.
Files are encrypted in transit over HTTPS and processed on indox infrastructure.
Free-tier files are kept for 24 hours after the job finishes, then deleted automatically.

Browsers save many web images as AVIF, and some editors and photo viewers still reject them. A PNG opens in all of them without a codec or extension to install.
A logo or product cut-out needs a see-through background. A PNG keeps it, whereas a JPG would fill it with a solid colour.
To inspect an encoder's result pixel by pixel, a lossless PNG is easier to compare and to diff than a second lossy file.
Application portals, print shops and content systems often list PNG and JPG only. Renaming the extension does not work; only a real PNG passes.

Yes, in our test. The transparent circle in a still AVIF was fully transparent in the PNG. Open the result on a checkerboard to check the edges.
AVIF compresses lossy and very tightly, while PNG stores every decoded pixel without loss. Our 11,686 byte AVIF became a 20,639 byte PNG, 1.77 times larger. Photos can grow more than flat graphics.
It fails. In our test an animated AVIF with three frames showed Failed and gave no PNG. Use a tool that can extract a single frame first, or start from a still image.
The PNG does not lose anything further from the decoded picture, but it cannot restore detail that AVIF compression already removed. For editing, it is a safe lossless copy.
In our test, yes. A 10-bit AVIF gave a 16-bit PNG with 760 distinct red levels in one gradient row. We did not test HDR files that use PQ or HLG.
Choose PNG when you need transparency or exact pixels. Choose JPG when a smaller file matters more and the picture has no see-through areas.
Support depends on your version and installed extensions, and some setups still cannot open AVIF. Converting to PNG avoids the question.
A renamed file can fail. If the converter reports Failed on a still image, check that it is a true .avif file and not a JPG or WebP with a changed extension.
