Qualified Electric Vehicle Credit
Form 8834 is the IRS form used to claim any qualified electric vehicle passive activity credit allowed for the current tax year. The form notes that the qualified electric vehicle credit was available for certain vehicles placed in service before 2007, so the form now covers passive activity credits from prior years that Form 8582-CR or Form 8810 allows for the current year.
It is not the form for newer vehicles. The form says to claim the credit for certain clean vehicles placed in service after 2022 on Form 8936.
The form is a one-page worksheet of seven lines that limits the credit by regular tax and tentative minimum tax, with the instructions printed on page 2. It is attached to the tax return. You can fill it out free in your browser on this page and download the result without an account.

Qualified electric vehicle passive activity credits allowed for the current tax year.
Regular tax before credits on line 2, the foreign tax credit and certain allowable credits on lines 3a to 3c, and net regular tax on line 4.
Tentative minimum tax from Form 6251, Form 4626 or Schedule I (Form 1041) on line 5, subtracted from line 4 on line 6.
The qualified electric vehicle credit, which is the smaller of line 1 or line 6.
The instructions say to enter the allowed credits from Form 8582-CR (individuals, estates and trusts) or Form 8810 (corporations).
Individuals enter the sum of Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, line 16, and Schedule 2 (Form 1040), line 1z. Corporations use Form 1120, Schedule J, line 2. Estates and trusts use Form 1041, Schedule G.
Enter any foreign tax credit on line 3a. The instructions list, by return type, which credits make up line 3b. Add them on line 3c.
Subtract line 3c from line 2. The instructions say tentative minimum tax is generally still figured even when no alternative minimum tax is owed, then subtracted from line 4.
Enter the smaller of line 1 or line 6, then report it on Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 6i; Form 1120, Schedule J, line 5b; or the appropriate line of the return.
You get the real form, filled in a browser tab, with nothing standing between you and the finished PDF.
The form says to attach it to your tax return. It has no separate mailing address.
The instructions say to use the October 2024 revision for tax years beginning in 2024 or later until a later revision is issued, and prior revisions for earlier tax years.
The instructions say that credit not usable because of the tax liability limit is lost, and it cannot be carried back or forward to other tax years.
