Form I-698: Application to Adjust Status From Temporary to Permanent Resident

Form I-698, Application to Adjust Status From Temporary to Permanent Resident (Under Section 245A of the INA), is used by a person who was granted temporary residence under section 245A of the Immigration and Nationality Act to apply to USCIS to adjust to lawful permanent resident status. The instructions say applicants apply under section 245A, as amended by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, and section 902 of the U.S. Department of State Authorization Bill of 1987.

The form asks for personal details, absences from the United States since becoming a temporary resident, biographic information and a set of eligibility questions in Part 3, including how the applicant meets the English and U.S. history and government requirement.

The instructions say the Secretary of Homeland Security may waive some grounds of inadmissibility and that a waiver is requested on Form I-690. Two passport-style photographs go with the application.

How to fill out Form I-698

  1. 1

    Use the current edition

The USCIS page lists edition 01/20/25 and says all pages need to be from the same edition, with the edition date and page numbers visible. Type or print legibly in black ink.

  2. 2

Complete the required Part 1 fields

The USCIS page says it rejects the form without the Family Name, U.S. Mailing Address, Date of Birth and Place of Birth in Part 1. Write N/A where a question does not apply and None for a zero.

  3. 3

List every absence in Item 17

Start with the most recent. The form says a single absence over 30 days, or total absences over 90 days, are explained in Part 7.

  4. 4

Enter height and weight as shown

The instructions say height goes in feet and inches and weight in pounds, with 000 entered for an unknown weight or one under 30 or over 699 pounds.

  5. 5

Answer Items 2 to 29 in Part 3

Explain any Yes answer in Part 7. The form says a Yes answer does not necessarily mean the applicant is not entitled to adjust status or register for lawful permanent residence.

  6. 6

Sign Part 4 and add photos

A stamped or typewritten name is not accepted. The instructions describe two identical 2 by 2 inch color passport-style photos with the name and A-Number lightly printed on the back. This page lets you fill the form online free, then print it.
