Schedule E (Form 8933): Election Certification

Schedule E (Form 8933), Election Certification, is a two-page schedule attached to Form 8933, Carbon Oxide Sequestration Credit. The IRS About page says to use it if you're the owner of the capture facility that supplied qualified carbon oxide to another person that was properly disposed of in geological storage, used in an EOR project, or utilized in a manner consistent with section 45Q(f), and you elect under section 45Q(f)(3)(B) to allow the credit to that person.

The schedule records the electing taxpayer, one credit claimant, how that claimant disposed of, injected or utilized the carbon oxide, the credit rate, and the metric tons and credit allowed to the claimant and kept by the electing taxpayer. The instructions say the election can cover all or only part of the credit, a new election is made each year, and a separate election is made for each facility.

What's on Schedule E (Form 8933)

Part I, Section 1: electing taxpayer

Lines 1 to 7b take the electing taxpayer's name, TIN and address, the location of the capture facility, the placed-in-service date of the carbon capture equipment, the type of industrial facility, and the IRS-issued registration and EPA e-GGRT ID numbers.

Section 2, lines 8 to 11: credit claimant

The claimant's name, TIN and address, and a Yes or No attestation on line 11 that the claimant isn't a subcontractor.

Lines 12 to 14b: disposal or utilization

Line 12 has three boxes: secure geological storage not used in an EOR project, storage used as a tertiary injectant in an EOR project, or utilization described in section 45Q(f)(5). Lines 13 to 14b take the disposal site location and its ID numbers.

Lines 15 and 16: equipment period

Six boxes on line 15 sort the carbon oxide by when the capture equipment or direct air capture (DAC) facility was placed in service and how it was handled. Line 16 elects the credit rates for equipment placed in service prior to February 9, 2018.

Line 17: credit rate

Eight boxes, a to h, list the rate or dollar amount, such as $28.43 and $14.21 for tax year beginning in 2025, and $17, $12, $36 and $26 for equipment placed in service after 2022.

Part II: election information

Lines 1 to 3 take metric tons by the box checked on line 12. Line 4 is the tons allowed to the claimant, line 6 the credit allowed (line 4 times line 5), and lines 7 and 8 the tons and credit the electing taxpayer keeps.

How to fill out Schedule E (Form 8933)

  1. 1

    Section 1

Enter the electing taxpayer's information from Form 8933 on lines 1 to 7b. For line 5, the instructions explain the original placed-in-service date of carbon capture equipment and refer to Rev. Rul. 2021-13.

  2. 2

    Lines 8 to 11

Enter one credit claimant's name, TIN and address, then answer line 11. Each other credit claimant gets its own schedule.

  3. 3

    Lines 12 to 16

Check the line 12 box that matches what the claimant did with the carbon oxide. Lines 13 to 14b apply only if box 12a or 12b was checked. Then check the line 15 box and, if it applies, line 16.

  4. 4

    Line 17

Check the rate or dollar amount based on the boxes checked for lines 12, 15 and 16. The instructions point to the 2025 inflation adjusted credit rates and applicable dollar amounts.

  5. 5

Part II, lines 1 to 6

Enter metric tons on line 1, 2 or 3. The form says they should agree with Schedule A (Form 8933), line 12, or Schedule F (Form 8933), Part III, line 12. Enter the tons allowed on line 4, and multiply line 4 by line 5 for line 6.

  6. 6

    Lines 7 and 8

Subtract line 4 from the tons on line 1, 2 or 3 for line 7, then multiply line 7 by line 5 for the credit the electing taxpayer keeps on line 8.
