Form 4868 (sp): Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File, Spanish Version

Form 4868 (sp) is the Spanish version of Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, for 2025. Its Spanish title is "Solicitud de Prórroga Automática para Presentar la Declaración del Impuesto sobre el Ingreso Personal de los Estados Unidos". The form and its instructions are in Spanish, the mailing chart lists most state names in English, and it points to www.irs.gov/Form4868SP for the latest information.

The IRS About page says a U.S. citizen or resident files this form to request an automatic extension of time to file. This edition says it gives 6 more months, or 4 months for a citizen or resident who is "out of the country", to file Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR or 1040-SS. It asks for identification and an estimate of the 2025 tax, payments and balance due, and it says it does not extend the time to pay.

The English edition is Form 4868. You can fill out the PDF free in your browser on this page and download it without an account.

What's on Form 4868 (sp)

Page 1: three ways to ask

Pay electronically and mark the payment as for an extension, e-file Form 4868, or mail a paper form with an optional payment.

Tax year line

Calendar year 2025, or the start and end dates of another tax year.

Part I: identification

Line 1 for names and address, line 2 for your SSN and line 3 for your spouse's SSN.

Part II: lines 4 to 7

Estimated total tax liability for 2025, total payments, balance due, and the amount you are paying.

Lines 8 and 9: checkboxes

Line 8 for a citizen or resident who is out of the country, and line 9 for a Form 1040-NR filer who received no wages subject to U.S. withholding.

Pages 2 to 4: instructions

When to file, interest and penalties, line instructions, how to pay, where to mail the paper form, and private delivery services.

The labels are in Spanish. The items below give their English meaning.

How to fill out Form 4868 (sp)

  1. 1

    Line 1

Enter your names and address. For a joint return, list both spouses in the order they will appear on the return. The form says a new mailing address is updated only with Form 8822, not by this form.

  2. 2

    Lines 2 and 3

On a joint return, enter the SSN that will appear first on line 2 and the other on line 3. Without an SSN or ITIN, write "ITIN TO BE REQUESTED". An estate or trust filing Form 1040-NR enters its EIN.

  3. 3

    Line 4

Estimate the 2025 tax you expect on line 24 of Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, or line 7 of Part I of Form 1040-SS. If you expect zero, enter "-0-". The form says an unreasonable estimate voids the extension.

  4. 4

    Line 5

Enter the total 2025 payments you expect on line 33 of Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, leaving out line 10 of Schedule 3. Do not include the amount paid with this form.

  5. 5

    Lines 6 and 7

Subtract line 5 from line 4, or enter "-0-" if line 5 is larger. On line 7, enter what you are paying. The extension is still available if you cannot pay line 6, but interest and a late payment penalty may apply.

  6. 6

    Lines 8 and 9

Check line 8 if you are out of the country on the due date. Check line 9 if you file Form 1040-NR, had no wages subject to U.S. withholding and your return is due June 15, 2026.

Deadline, where to mail and penalties

Deadline

File by the due date of the return. For a 2025 calendar year return that is April 15, 2026 for most people. People affected by a disaster may get more time, see www.irs.gov/DisasterRelief.

How long the extension lasts

Generally no more than 6 months, which the form gives as October 15, 2026 for most calendar year filers. It points to Publication 54 for an exception for people living abroad.

Where to mail

The chart depends on your state and whether you send a payment. With a payment, it goes to a P.O. box in Charlotte, NC or Louisville, KY. Without one, it goes to the IRS in Austin, TX, Kansas City, MO or Ogden, UT.

Paying electronically

IRS Direct Pay, your IRS online account, EFTPS, a debit or credit card, or a digital wallet such as Click to Pay, PayPal or Venmo. The form says to keep the confirmation number.

Penalties

Late payment is usually half (½) of 1% per month, up to 25%. Late filing is usually 5% per month, up to 25%. More than 60 days late, the minimum is $525 (adjusted for inflation) or the balance due, whichever is smaller.

After filing

The IRS contacts you only if the request is denied. Do not attach Form 4868 to the return. The payment goes on line 10 of Schedule 3 (Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR) or line 9 of Part I of Form 1040-SS.

Who files Form 4868 (sp)?

  • Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR and 1040-SS filers

The form says it asks for 6 more months to file one of these returns.

  • Citizens and residents out of the country

They get 2 extra months to file and pay without asking. To get 4 more months to file, they file this form and check line 8.

  • Form 1040-NR filers without wages

Those who received no wages subject to U.S. income tax withholding and whose return is due June 15, 2026 check line 9.

  • Fiscal year filers

The form says a taxpayer who files on a fiscal year basis has to file a paper Form 4868.

  • Not needed when paying electronically

A payment made electronically and marked as for an extension gets the extension automatically, so no Form 4868 is filed.

  • Not for some cases

The form says not to file it if you want the IRS to figure your tax, or if a court order requires the return by the due date.

The IRS About page says a U.S. citizen or resident files it. The individual e-files it or mails it to the IRS, or pays electronically instead of filing it.
