Form N-300: Application to File Declaration of Intention

Form N-300, Application to File Declaration of Intention, lets a lawful permanent resident notify USCIS of the intent to become a citizen of the United States. The USCIS page says this form is not required for naturalization, but some states may require it to conduct certain business with that state.

The instructions say a person may file if they are a lawful permanent resident over 18 years of age and are currently residing in the United States under a lawful admission for permanent residence. The form says Form N-300 is filed while in the United States.

Part 6 is the Declaration of Intention itself. The instructions say USCIS returns the original Declaration of Intention page if the application is approved and keeps a copy of it in the applicant's file.

How to fill out Form N-300

  1. 1

Use edition 04/01/24 and black ink

Type or print legibly in black ink. The USCIS page says every page has to come from the same edition, with the edition date and page numbers visible, or USCIS may reject the form.

  2. 2

    Enter your 9 digit A-Number

The USCIS page says the form is rejected without the 9 digit A-Number in Part 1. The form repeats an A-Number box at the top of the later pages.

Enter your 9 digit A-Number on page 1 of Form N-300: Application to File Declaration of Intention, as printed by USCIS
  3. 3

    Give your permanent resident date

Use the date on your Permanent Resident Card in mm/dd/yyyy form, for example 08/09/1988 for August 9, 1988. The instructions say USCIS may reject the application without it.

  4. 4

Report long absences in Part 5

If Item 9 is Yes for an absence of six months or longer, the form asks for the departure and arrival dates of all absences in Part 5. Write N/A where a question does not apply and None for a zero.

  5. 5

    Review Part 6

The instructions say Part 6 is completed and signed by the applicant. When the form is filled on a computer, the Part 1 answers prefill Part 6, so check them before printing.

  6. 6

    Sign Parts 2 and 6

A stamped or typewritten name is not accepted, and the form says USCIS rejects Form N-300 if Part 6 is not signed. This page lets you fill the form online free, then print it for signature.
