Form G-884: Request for the Return of Original Documents

Form G-884, Request for the Return of Original Documents, is how a person asks USCIS to return original documents that were submitted to establish eligibility for an immigration or citizenship benefit.

The instructions say it is for originals that USCIS did not request with a petition, application or request. When a form asked for originals, USCIS says it returns them automatically once it no longer needs them, so no G-884 is needed. The instructions also point to the instructions of the form you filed to see whether non-requested originals are available for return or destroyed after scanning.

One G-884 covers several documents in a single USCIS file. A separate request is needed for each file.

How to fill out Form G-884

  1. 1

Type or print in black ink

The instructions say to answer every question, write N/A where a question does not apply and None for a zero. Keep the edition date and page numbers visible on every printed page.

  2. 2

Describe the documents in Item 8

The instructions ask you to be as specific as possible, for example the marriage certificate of the two named people, and to give a receipt number in Item 9 if there is one.

  3. 3

Complete Part 2 for the file's subject

The instructions say missing information can make it difficult for USCIS to locate the record. Item 17 records which type of ID the requestor provided.

  4. 4

    Attach two forms of ID

The listed examples are a Permanent Resident Card, a driver's license, a state ID, an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-765), a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, or a U.S. or foreign passport.

  5. 5

Sign Part 5 before the certifying official

The form says not to sign until you are before the certifying official. The USCIS page says the signature is notarized when you are not appearing in person before a USCIS official.

Where to file, evidence and fees

Where to file

The USCIS page says to send it to the USCIS office or service center processing a pending case. After a final decision, it goes to the office or service center that performed the last action on the case.

Notarization

The instructions say Form G-884 is notarized when submitted by mail, and does not need notarizing when submitted in person at a scheduled appointment.

Fee

The fee is on the USCIS Fee Schedule page (Form G-1055), which can change. Check it on the day you file.

Copies, not originals

The instructions ask for legible photocopies and warn that originals sent when not required or requested may be destroyed right after USCIS receives them.

Translations

A foreign-language document needs a full English translation with the translator's certification that it is complete and accurate.

U.S. address

The instructions say a United States address is needed to file this request.

Who uses Form G-884?

  • People who sent unrequested originals

The instructions describe the form as for someone who submitted original documents USCIS did not request and now wants them returned.

  • Requests from your own file

A requestor asking for documents from their own A-File or Receipt File sends copies of two forms of identification, according to the USCIS checklist.

  • Requests from someone else's file

The instructions say to send proof of the relationship to the subject. When the subject is deceased or incapacitated, they ask for evidence of a power of attorney or that the requestor is the executor of the estate.

  • Who signs

The requestor signs. The instructions say a parent or legal guardian may sign for a requestor under 14, and a legal guardian may sign for a mentally incompetent person.

  • When no request is needed

If USCIS asked for the originals, the form says USCIS returns them automatically once it no longer needs them.
